I fought to continue to excel even when it seemed impossible. I did not want my mom to ever give up so neither could I. My mom sacrificed her life in Peru to give me and my siblings better opportunities, such as attending college. I would be the first in my family to attend college. I needed to push myself, even when I did not want to. In addition, I began to work more hours to help out my family, while still trying to excel in school. This December I was accepted into [college]. My mother was so proud of me that she cried tears of happiness.

In August 2021, my life took an unexpected turn when my mother posed a question of moving to the United states which altered the course of my future:”Mija, ¿qué te parece si te vienes a vivir a Estados Unidos conmigo?”After a brief moment of contemplation, I responded with enthusiasm,”Está bien mami, me encantaría.”Little did I know, everything was about to change.Transitioning to the United States presented unforeseen challenges. Initially, I had to navigate virtual classes from my Colombian school while spending the whole day by myself between the four walls of my bedroom. Since my mom was always working, the possibilities for me going out and socializing were minimal. It wasn’t until December 2021 that I was able to enroll in Richmond Hill High School for my sophomore year and finally put my English skills towork.My transition was far from smooth. However, through determination and hard work, I strived to excel academically and socially, despite the language barrier. As an immigrant, I empathize with the struggles of adjusting to a new culture. Thus, I actively support new foreign students by helping in the technology office during my free periods and afterschool. Additionally, I serve as a translator when Spanish speakers are being asked things they can’t understand yet.

College is expensive and the route to studying to become an ophthalmologist requires a hefty tuition. As a recipient of the Neil and Yael Reich Memorial Scholarship, I’ll use that money towards my tuition and other expenses. I’m looking forward to moving out and studying in a university that will prepare me for my future. Books are extremely expensive- especially medical related books. By receiving this prestigious scholarship from the Neil and Yael Reich Memorial Scholarship, I can boost my chances of achieving my success.

My educational experience has been an interesting journey throughout the past four years. I have learned a lot of different skills and mastered some of them that I never thought I would one day. Many challenges helped in shaping the person who I have become today. Some of the challenges were adapting to being part of a new environment, taking upper-level classes in my major, working in various team dynamics and many more. I have been privileged enough to try many different things here at college. During my sophomore summer, I was able to conduct research along with a professor in the mechanical engineering department. I was able to get a glimpse into what life in academia looks like. It helped inform my mind to know what to expect if I want to go and get a PhD after graduating. After that, during my junior year, I was fortunate enough to get an internship with an engineering company. The internship helped me in realizing how life is in the corporate world (which is significantly different from academia). I was lucky enough to work on a project which is meaningful to the company’s’ mission. I also received extensive mentorship which I am grateful for. As my senior year is coming to an end, I have been fortunate to conduct research for my senior experience. Starting from brainstorming to conducting experiments, to analyzing data and to finally writing the results. All of those experiences have helped me in gaining tremendous amounts of knowledge and helped me in realizing what I actually enjoy doing. Many of those accomplishments could have not happened without all of the great support that I received from various people, and amazing scholarship opportunities such as the Neil and Yael Reich Scholarship Program. This opportunity helped me to dedicate a lot of time to my studies and my other interests rather than working part time jobs or borrowing out loans to pay my tuition and other related expenses. I am beyond grateful for having the opportunity to be a part of this great community that cares about the success of individuals. The Neil and Yael Reich Scholarship is not a typical scholarship, it is a special type of scholarship.

Being a first-generation student and having high expectations from my family and [a health condition] diagnosis made it challenging for me since it made me feel unconfident…. I found myself in a predicament with no way out, facing the question: When will you graduate? For being the first student at the university, you must think highly of yourself, don't you? You don't seem to be going anywhere. Is the work you perform truly worthwhile? My friends fulfilling their dreams made me joyful, regardless, it also made me think if one day I'll accomplish my dream as well? Whereas I began to realize that I would never be like them, I'm only able to be ME. I merely needed to glance back to see that, despite my attentive progress, I had left my previous location behind; living one of my past prayers. I'm not going to be lightning-fast given that I'm conscious that this is a journey and not a race. Having in my mind that if I fall, someone else will pick me up, and if someone falls, I'll pick them up as well. Being a member of the Neil and Yael Scholarship, made me comprehend that.

I'm part of one of the most outstanding organizations in the world and I know there is a reason for you to select me. If there is life, there is hope and opportunity that makes me feel honored. It fills me with joy to be one of your scholarship recipients. Your generosity is a spring of water in the middle of the desert; you are like a lighthouse in the midst of a storm in the ocean; with teary eyes, I can only thank you for the help you provide, which allows me to pay my tuition and MetroCards. With so many financial troubles, you've been everything. I will always declare that my dream is to be as cherished and valued as Neil and Yael Reich or just to make them glad that I did not give up along the road but instead persevered since they were one of my motivators... Thank you so much for being those lifesavers for adolescents like us; without your help and kindness, I don't know where we would be. #cunyedu

Scholarships provide financial support and enable students to pursue their dreams and reach their full potential. They remove barriers and create opportunities for success. I want to thank Neil and Yael Scholarship… because with the help of the first check I bought my computer which I am currently using for my college day to day life study. After that I got my second check which I used for my books and for my car oil. As we all know, oil is too expensive in day-to-day life so after using the money for books I used the rest of the money for my car so I can never be late to my college. Last but not the least, my overall experience with college and education is going to be great but now I am getting sad because as I am moving toward the end of my study I am going to miss all of this in my new college. With this I want to thank Neil and Yael Scholarship for supporting me with a scholarship with which I am continuing my study without any stoppage. I don’t know how I should say thank you to your team because thanks is not enough for all that you all are doing for me and also for other students. I will promise you that as you are helping me to continue my studies I will also give back as much as I can to my community after getting settled down in my life. I am now a Junior …and am feeling so grateful to have accomplished and experienced so much in the last three years. I truly must thank the Neil and Yael Reich Memorial Scholarship for allowing me to be where I am with the assistance I’ve received which helped me acquire necessary textbooks and help aid my single-parent Dad who has to bear the responsibilities of paying for my older brother and my education. If it weren’t for the help of the scholarship, I wouldn’t be able to take a load off my dad’s shoulders which I’m endlessly thankful for. To dive deeper into my educational and extracurricular experiences, I’ve been on the Dean’s List for the last three years — last semester acquiring a 4.0 GPA in all my classes. I’ve also decided to pursue a 4+1 accelerated program to obtain a master’s degree…. In extracurriculars, I’ve got to learn so much as President of an organization and leading 25 of my E-Board members. I would have never imagined myself to be President of an organization as I used to be so shy and not confident in myself — now, I’ve spoken and performed at numerous banquets in front of hundreds of students. I’ve developed so many leadership skills, experienced ups and downs, and proudly taken the responsibilities to oversee a group of talented students who have acquired numerous skills under me. I’m also the President of a new organization on campus. I can’t wait to do even more the next 1-2 years and share it with everyone! The Neil and Yael Reich Memorial Scholarship has been a tremendous help and has been a big reason for all the opportunities I’ve experienced. I am forever grateful every day for the support!

When I started thinking about my future there was always one thing which made me feel bad and helpless. That is, I didn't have a laptop and I always think that if I don't have a laptop then how will I continue my study in college. But (the) Neil And Yael Reich Memorial scholarship held my hand by giving me the amount of 1,500. With the amount I bought my new laptop which I am using in my college to continue my study.
For me the education experience is very up and down at every step because there is no one in my family who can guide me regarding college and education because I am the first child in my family who went to college in the United States.
