2016 NRM Scholarship Recipients

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING TEAM NEIL AND THE NEIL REICH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP!

How exhilarating it was to march
along the great boulevards
in the sunflash of trumpets
and under all the waving flags—
the flag of ambition, the flag of love.

This is the opening verse from a poem The Parade, by Billy Collins, which was read at the Team Neil 2016 gathering the evening before the Five Boro Bike Tour.

How exhilarating indeed… We did it again!!! Even though the sun did not shine, our team spirit did!

I would like to thank you for being part of Team Neil 2016 and being part of the effort to memorialize my late husband Neil Reich in such a special way. You all bring something special to the team. Whether you are a rider or a supporter of a rider, whether you contributed money to the scholarship fund, whether you knew Neil personally, or just know and support our children and friends, the community that evolved through Team Neil is unique, powerful and meaningful.

In almost five years Team Neil was able to evolve into an established 503(c)(3) organization that has supported and continues to support English Language Learners (ELL) students in their pursuit for education. We are helping these students achieve their personal goals which ultimately might help improve their lives and the lives of people around them. Even though the ripple effect of every dollar that we raise and give as a scholarship cannot be traced, we here all know (and Neil certainly did) that education can lead to productive and meaningful life.

So the “flag of ambition, the flag of love” continue to flutter in Forest Hills, New York City and beyond!

Thank you for being part of Team Neil 2016.

Your support and your tax-deductible donations, we were able to raise just over $22,000 to support the education goals of some very deserving young people. With this money, we are pleased to share that we are providing financial assistance to four graduating seniors from Richmond Hill High School (where Neil taught), a student graduating from Dobbs Ferry High School, and a recent graduate of Fox Lane High School. All of these students have demonstrated perseverance in the face of tremendous hurdles. The scholarship money will go directly toward funding costs related to their college educations.

We’re also excited to announce that we have reached out to last year’s recipients and have offered to renew their scholarships. We plan to do this for this year’s recipients, too!

This year’s Neil Reich Memorial Scholarship recipients are Blessy, Maria, Erick, Sunpreet, Maria, Katherine, Tanzim, and Isabell.

Blessy is a pleasure to have in my classroom. She is very motivated and hardworking. All of her work is done above expectations. Blessy strives for an amazing future and with her hard work and dedication she will have a great one.

Maria is a hardworking and persistent student who has always put her best foot forward in all that she does.  We have seen her grow from a student with barely any English knowledge to a student who is now teaching students how to do the tasks and activities in class. She is a student with strong work ethic, and serves as a positive role model for her peers who follow her lead.  She has definitely helped shape our school community.

Sunpreet is a promising young man with enormous potential.  He is incredibly hardworking and follows through on all his tasks.  This year Sunpreet became an ambassador for his school to help assist newcomer student’s transition into our school community.  He has also been selected to speak on behalf of his school to middle school students about his experiences.  He has been a positive role model and spokesperson for Richmond Hill High School.  Sunpreet has also been consistent with his grades.  He has achieved honor roll status and is highly regarded by teachers and peers.

Tanzim

“The tuition of colleges in the United States of America has risen a tremendous amount. As a result, it has become harder for families with lower- income like mine to afford to send their children to colleges. That is why I desire The Neil Reich Scholarship. I will use these funds in order to buy textbooks that would be required by the courses I take in college. I will also use the funds to pay part of my tuition. Thus, in general, I would use the funds for anything that would help me further my education in college.”

Isabell

“I want to continue with my education and be able to go to the 6-year pharmacy program in St. John’s University. I will use all the funds I will receive from this scholarship on my education, which ultimately helps me to achieve my goals. I know that someday as a pharmacist I will be able to find a cure for many diseases like, autoimmune disease, which will be able to save many beloved grandmothers’ lives and more.”

Maria
